After one year, Windows Phone 7 continues to be a small mark in the mobile phone world. Who says that? Steve Ballmer. After a year, Windows 7 sales has been more than impressive, so have sales for Office 2010. But the third high profile product, Windows Phone 7, which Microsoft hoped would compete with iPhone, and Android hasn’t been successful.
In part it is not the product’s fault. Microsoft entered the playing field late; by the time it was making a entry, Apple was releasing it’s latest version of iPhone. Also, Apps products were making a high profile impact, supporting the view that the newest PC on the market was actually the size of a mobile phone.
Then there is the problem that the Windows phone 7 wasn’t radically different. It was just a junior mobile phone that carved out it’s presence from the Iron Man of mobile phone technology, Apple. There was nothing new or outstanding about the device, it was not a unique product … and it didn’t have the apps that Apple or Android had, so it was left in a distant place.
So how is Microsoft going to get on track? One way is to have an exclusive arrangement with an OEM, Nokia. In this way, changes to the mobile phone can be implemented quickly and efficiently. This makes sense. Now the Microsoft software developers can work closely with the hardware developers and closely tie the two products together. This is both efficient and a time saver.
Microsoft is anxious to let Nokia run the ship, it is even allowing Nokia to make modifications and customize the Windows Phone 7 product. Microsoft hopes that this re-engagement will make the Windows Phone 7 more market worthy since by having a second view point, the mobile device will be more market friendly and interesting, and consumer enticing.
