Earlier on this week, Microsoft confirmed that Windows Phone 7 Mango was well on the way and was on schedule. According to Microsoft’s schedule it will be released sometime during the fall. However this latest rumor from Pocket-Lint reports that Microsoft may be preparing to release this update a bit sooner than expected.

Based on information from “trusted sources” Pocket-Lint are reporting that Mango’s official roll out will begin on the first day of September. Ahead of Microsoft’s vague “fall” release they previously announced.

However Pocket-Lint didn’t have to much else to say about the update other than the release date. Microsoft themselves have confirmed that all current Windows Phone 7 devices will receive the update, we have no information on when they will, or if they all will at once. Some users may get it straightaway, while others may be forced to wait for a while.

But there’s more to this than you think. There is no coincidence about this release date, the very next day Europe’s largest consumer electronics show takes place in Berlin. The IFA is where tons of new gadgets and more than likely mango powered devices will be unveiled for the first time. So I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Mango deliver sooner than expected.

The internet seems to have some strange obsession with cats. I don’t know what it is, but people just seem to go mad for cats! Be it videos of cats making odd noises or cute little kittens as your desktop wallpaper, everyone seems to fall for those feline creatures. Some of you may remember a little mod that I wrote up a while ago. It added elevator music to your progress bars when you had to wait, loading, downloading or transferring files.

Well now there’s a new version of it, but this time cats have taken over your progress bars. You can now get a Nyan themed cat to take over your progress bars, and the best bit? It also adds that trippy Nyan cat music for extra effect. Don’t believe me? Check out the video below to see it in action – and don’t forget to have your speakers turned on as well!

This little mod was created by Ben Stone who also wrote that earlier elevator music mod I mentioned. Ben details on his website how the idea came about, but basically he saw a story on Reddit where somebody was looking for something like this. So he decided to go and do it.

I’m sure you’re all itching to try out this little app now, but remember it only works on Windows 7 machines. All the installation instructions can be found here and you can download the file from below

Enjoy!

We’ve been wondering when this day will finally come for a while. It didn’t take Windows 7 too long to overtake Windows Vista in terms of market share, but we all agreed that the biggest test for Windows 7 would be to see if it could take down the mighty Windows XP. And it would appear that it has just done that.

Or at least in the USA anyway. According to the latest results from Statcounter, Windows 7 has just edged in front of Windows XP for the first time this month.

StatCounter os US monthly 201003 201104 600x351 Windows 7 Overtakes Windows XP in USA

It’s very very close, and I’m sure that there will be some conflicting information out there from other resources, but Statcounter is known as one of the most reliable market share tools. According to Statcounter, Windows 7 now has just slipped past XP at 31.71% of the market share while Windows XP is at 31.56%

Windows Vista? Well that’s still struggling away at a mere 19%, slowly continuing its decline, which I don’t think too many people will be disappointed to hear about.

Now there are a few caveats with these figures. These results are based solely on desktops in the United States of America that were found to be running Windows 7. So while Windows 7 may now be the most dominant operating system in the US, it’s still behind XP on the global side of things. In the world is stands a 31.17% where as Windows XP is still the king at 47.17%.

Either way it’s still an impressive victory for Microsoft, and what happens in the US, is generally reflected on a global scale a couple of months later, so I’m sure we can expect to see the growth of Windows 7 to continue as XP slowly declines.

I wonder how long we’ll be waiting until Windows 7 is the overall market leader worldwide? Hedge your bets in the comments below

It’s been a while, but Microsoft has made an update to the Windows 7 Bing Update them pack. The theme pack in question is a unique addition to the collection of Bing-branded themes from Microsoft.  Here is how it works, Windows 7 has an option of allowing its users to set themes to customize their desktops the they want. But, the problem is that these themes are limited to a few wallpapers after which it all becomes  boring again. But the  “Bing Dynamic” theme changes things.  It updates your Windows 7 theme with new wallpapers directly from Bing.

Bing Dynamic

Actually, there is more, with Bing Dynamic Microsoft offered a special theme featuring auto-updating theme capabilities.  What this means is that Microsoft designed a theme pack, which is  capable of automatically refreshing the collection of wallpapers through an RSS feed.  So the plan was that for Windows 7 users who installed Bing Dynamic would receive new wallpapers from Microsoft at certain times throughout the year.  The idea was to enable the program  and receive two new photos from Bing every week for three months.  But that didn’t happen. In fact the program lay dormant.  There haven’t been any updates to the Bing dynamic theme since November but it appears it is going again with 2 new pictures just released.

Back To Life

But the Bing Dynmic theme has come back to life. The Bing Dynamics theme is now available for download through the Windows Personalization Gallery at no charge, and now that auto-updating has been switched back on, users have fresh reasons to download and install it.

You can get the Bing Dynamic at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/bing-dynamic-theme

Presumably this Bing Dynamic program won’t stall and fizzle out. It’s not in Microsoft’s best interest to let it. So it would be a good program to jump into for the variety of themes and make your desktop more entertaining.

Note: Windows 7 themes can only be used in Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions.

The Windows 7 Family Pack is already one of the greatest deals that’s available from Microsoft. Instead of paying the normal $119.99 single license upgrade pack for Windows 7, you can get 3 upgrade licenses for just $149.99. That’s a saving of nearly $210.

However that saving is about to get even bigger, because Amazon have just reduced the price of the Windows 7 Family Pack on their site from $149.99 to a mere $109.99! That’s an additional $30 saving off the normal price, giving you a grand total saving of $240 over the traditional method of buying 3 single licenses.

Some users may be reluctant to upgrade to Windows 7 because of the price it, but looking at it this way, you can now get 3 Windows 7 licenses for less than one costs ( note:on the amazon store the family pack and single licenses are priced the same, but other stores are more expensive) !

If you haven’t jumped to upgrade yet, now is definitely the time to do it if you’re not planning on buying a new computer anytime soon. Microsoft are actually stopped the sale of the Windows 7 Family Pack for a while before it came back at the end of last year.

So make sure you take advantage of this offer soon, because there was rumors flying around that Microsoft we’re going to stop the sale of the Family Pack once it’s current stock of it ran out, Amazon may well be selling off the last of their stock.

Why wouldn’t you go for it now, it works out at a mere $36 per PC, and even if you’re only upgrading one or two PC’s you’re still saving money and could even sell the other one ( I’m not saying you should)

To take advantage of this head over to Amazon
