We are all well aware at how well Windows 7 is doing in terms of gaining market share. It’s long surpassed Windows Vista and is also well on the way to overtaking Windows XP. It already has in the US, and is not too far off in the rest of the world. However it’s anyone’s guess as to when Windows 7 will claim the number one spot.

Analyst firm Gartner Inc, is now sticking its neck out and claiming that by the end of 2011, Windows 7 will become the worlds leading operating system. It will be running on 94 percent of new PCs and on 42 percent of PCs around the world. They predict that the steady improvements in IT budgets throughout 2010 and 2011 are helping to accelerate the deployment of Windows 7 in enterprise markets, particularly in the US and Asia. By the end of 2011 they expect nearly 635 million new PCs worldwide will be shipped with Windows 7 running on them.

The statement Gartner released also said that the company predicts Apple’s Mac Os will be on 4.5 percent of new PCs this year. However it doesn’t expect Chrome OS, Android or Web OS to get any significant market share on PCs in the next few years. This is kind of obvious since those OS’s are more designed for smartphones and tablets.

Since 2008 Gartner say that Mac OS X has grown from 3.3 percent to 4 percent in 2010. By 2015 they predict 5.2 percent of new PCs will be running Mac OS X. The market share Mac holds varies greatly be region. In North America and Western Europe it is growing much faster.

Linux isn’t expected to gain any ground either, it’s still expected to be a niche for the next 5 years with its share below 2 percent. It’s just too expensive to port applications from Windows to Linux and the success it experienced on mini-netbooks was rather short lived.

It will be interesting to see just how accurate these predictions from Gartner are. Does anyone else agree with them? Will Windows 7 be king by the end of 2011?

Windows 7 improved the out of the box media codec situation over Windows Vista, but things aren’t quite perfect with average support for MKV files and no Blu-ray support.  To get the perfect Windows 7 Media Center codec support required a bit of fiddling and crossing fingers, particularly when it came to supporting MKV files.

Although codec packs like Shark007 improve W7MC MKV support, they still leave a bit of a blackhole when it comes to providing an easy way to change language or subtitle streams when playing MKV file, relying on buggy 3rd party addons like the Media Control plugin which works sporadically.  Skipping and fast-forwarding MKV files within W7MC is also difficult using these apps – fast-forwarding and rewinding doesn’t work, and skip forward or backwards too quickly and W7MC will crash.

Last week W7MC Arcsoft upgraded their TotalMedia Theatre 5 suite with the 5.0.1.133 patch which improved its MKV capabilities to include support for multiple audio tracks, and support for standard and VobSub subtitles in MKV.  This is brilliant news as finally there’s a way to easily play MKV files in W7MC, that also passes the WAF test.

Now, unfortunately TMT5 is quite pricey at $99.99 but it is the best media player and in tandem with My Movies 4, it will provide the ultimate W7MC experience without having to spend hours if not weeks configuring codecs:

  • Play any media file smoothly
  • Full HD and 3D support – including full MKV support
  • Play blu-ray discs (and with My Movies play blu-ray rips on hard drives)
  • Play any 2D Video or Photo in 3D
  • Upscale SD content with SimHD
There is a free trial if you want to try TMT5 out before making the plunge.

One of, certainly my, biggest criticisms of Windows Phone is the inability to synchronise Internet Favourites from your PC or Mac.  When you set up the phone, or indeed have to reset it for whatever reason, you have to use the handset’s fiddly on-screen keyboard to type everything in from scratch.

Now this might not be a problem for some simple domains, but many of us regularly visit websites with complex PHP or ASP code in the URL, or simply have a lot of websites we vitis on a regular basis.

The Mango update to Windows Phone still doesn’t address this problem (though Microsoft have told me they’re aware of, and working on this and other problems).  You’ll be pleased to hear though that, finally Mango does offer a way to get website links from your computer (even a Linux or Android device) onto your Windows Phone.

windows phone 7 skydrive support Transfer Internet Favourites to Windows Phone MangoSome software for Windows Phone does provide favourites sync, but they’re all third-party and work to varying degrees.  I’ve had a look through the marketplace too and couldn’t find any that were free.  There is a free workaround though!  This workaround is the inclusion of SkyDrive support, Microsoft’s cloud storage system.  There’s still no two-way sync, every update has to be done manually, but it is at least one way around the problem.

To get your Internet favourites onto your Windows Phone you need to copy and paste them into a Word or Notepad document and upload it to SkyDrive at www.skydrive.com.  If you don’t use Hotmail you’ll have been asked to create a Windows Live ID when you first went to the Marketplace in your phone.

You will then be able to access your SkyDrive account in the Office hub on the phone and open this document on the handset.  These links will then be clickable (make sure you have http:// at the beginning of each one) and will open in Internet Explorer on the phone when you can then favourite them.

This is you’ll agree, an annoying faff, but it is at least a free option for those people who don’t need to regularly sync Internet favourites with their phone and / or don’t want to have to pay for an app to do it for them.  The only downside is that unless you already have access to a SharePoint server onto which you can upload the file, you’ll have to wait for the Mango update this autumn to get this to work.

Articles like this really serve only one purpose, and this is to demonstrate how stupid it is that simple things get overlooked in software.  We can only hope that Microsoft rectify this, and other problems with Windows Phone, pretty quickly.

Have you ever noticed how your PC never has the correct time?  Are you always late for meetings, or does your Windows 7 Media Center always miss the start or end of recordings?

This is because the Windows 7 Clock out of the box uses the Microsoft time server, which is rarely correct, and also because the inbuilt Windows task runs in a very silly way.

Fixing your Windows Clock is simple.  Just follow the instructions in these two posts:

  1. Change your time server
  2. Create a new windows time scheduled task to synchronize time daily
