Well at last Microsoft has released a Windows 8 Developer Preview for us all. You can download it for free now here. Over at Windows 8 News I’ve put together a guide on how you can run Windows 8 on your Windows 7 machine in a virtual box.

The guide is very clear and straight forward so anybody should be able to do it. It allows you to play around with Windows 8 without actually using it as your main OS or dual booting. Windows 8 is still only at the developer preview stage so this is advisable as it’s still got a fair few things that need to be sorted out in it.

So if you can’t wait to get your hands on Windows 8 and start playing around with it, head over to Windows 8 News to read my guide on installing Windows 8 on your Windows 7  machine

If you are a Microsoft Windows Phone 7 owner and you have been anxious to receive the long awaited NoDo update for your phone, your wait is nearly over.

Just when you thought you’d seen every possible way to implement Windows 7…here comes CES and a company called OCOSMOS. Engadget is reporting that an unknown company who made a vaporware splash in last years Consumer Electronics Show is getting ready to preview a handheld gaming device that runs a version of Windows 7. That’s right, not Windows Phone 7, Windows 7.

Details right now are scarce, but Engadget notes two revealed details about the coming device:

…this unnamed gaming handheld will boast a dual-core Intel processor and run some version of Windows 7

It’s not a surprise that I favour Windows 7 as an operating system, but I’m very wary of Windows 7 on any tablet-like devices and especially a gaming handheld. I just don’t see the point of this, but I guess I’ll wait and see before making any negative judgements on their device. For right now, the picture above and the scant details are all we have to go on. What are your thoughts on using Windows 7 on a portable gaming device?

Both Microsoft and Apple are putting app stores into their desktop operating systems (at least the Microsoft story is true according to a leak earlier this year from HP) but Apple is set to beat Microsoft off the starting-blocks by a whole year and a half.

Not content to wait until the launch of the next version of OS X, the company will launch the Mac App Store on January 6th 2011 according to Business Newswire.

In a statement Apple boss Steve Jobs said “The App Store revolutionized mobile apps.  We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”

Apple has had enormous success with their app store for the iPhone, especially with the business model of making money from every app sold, and are hoping to replicate this on the desktop.  With the goodwill so many Apple users have towards the iTunes App Store as it is, it is entirely possible the new store will be a resounding success from the off.

It’s also an opportunity for Microsoft to watch how things go and to see how Apple are running things.  What are the biggest criticisms of the store?  Will it be run just through iTunes?  There will be a lot of opportunity here for Microsoft to find out the best way to implement their own Windows 8 (and presumably Windows 7 too) app store in time for the Windows 8 launch in 2012.

So far as selling your own apps on the Mac app store goes, developers can set the price of their apps and keep 70% of the revenue.  There will be no charge for free apps and no charges for hosting, marketing or credit card transactions.
