Yet again Microsoft is planning another big patch Tuesday for August. There is 13 security bulletins with patches for 22 potentially dangerous security vulnerabilities. Two of the thirteen bulletins are rated as “critical”. There is nine ranked as “important” and two as “moderate”.

Probably the biggest security vulnerability is with Internet Explorer. The “critical” update for IE fixes flaws which can lead to remote execution risks on all version of Internet Explorer, including IE 9. This months update patches will also fix holes in Windows 7 itself and Windows 2008. It patches up a potential, though difficult to exploit code execution risk. The update also covers security risks in Microsoft Office, .Net and Visual Studio.

Just when you think you’re careful enough, it strikes without mercy. Nevermind the hilarious YouTube you were watching or photo you’re about to take, it’s Bing time. I am of course referring to the inconspicuous but deadly capacitive search button on most of the popular Windows Phone 7 devices.

In spite of the firmware updates trickling out to some Samsung devices which disables the capacitive hardware buttons whilst the touchscreen is touched, the problem is not completely resolved and it’s simply too easy to accidentally activate the “back” and “search” buttons, even if you’re careful.

Since I enjoy myself a design challenge, I came up with this mockup taking some inspiration from the tap-and-hold gesture found on the desktop version of Windows.

In essence, it would provide a short buffer that would allow users to cancel their action without repercussions. Of course those who actually want to complete the action can do so as well without any too much hassle either.

Unfortunately, due to the new press-and-hold multitasking behavior of the “back” button in Mango limits the idea to just the search button. Nevertheless that seems to be the button I accidentally press the most anyway. Feedback welcome.

My main codec solution for Windows 7 for around the last 6-12 months has been centered around the Shark007 codec pack.  However, I’m now using TMT5 to play my mkv files because it now includes full subtitle support, so my need for a ‘bloated’ codec windows 7 codec pack has been diminished.

After reviewing my codec needs I realised that the only codec support I was missing was FLAC; Windows 7 supports its own lossless WMA format but not other loseless audio formats.   Read below how I added FLAC support to Windows 7 and Windows 7 Media Center.

Stage I – Install Additional Software

  1. Install the madFlac decoder: Windows 32bit users need to install just the 32 bit codecs.  Windows 64bit users need to install the 32bit version AND the 64bit codecs.  This is needed to play flac files
  2. Install Softpointer tag plugin: This plugin adds tag support to M4a/Flac/Ogg/Ape/Mpc files.  Without it you won’t see any track information or artwork when your files play

Stage II – Prepare Windows Media Player and Windows 7 Media Center

Now we need to rebuild our media center/media player music database to force it to rescan your music folders and add your flac files.
    1. Open Windows Media player and select all the files in your music library.
    2. Right-click and choose delete.
  • Ensure that you have selected ‘Delete from library only’ and not ‘Delete from library and my computer’ before you click ok

  • Once this has finished (it can take a while if you have a large library), open Windows Explorer and navigate to ’C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player’, replacing USERNAME with your username
  • Delete the ‘currentdatabase_372.wmdb‘ file.  If you can’t delete it, try going to the start menu typing in ‘services.msc’ and stopping the ‘WMP Network Sharing Service’ and trying again
  • Now re-open Windows Media Player and it will rebuild your music library to include your flac files

I would recommend not using W7MC until this has completed, as I’ve found that this significantly slows down the rebuilding of media libraries.

Many Windows 7 News visitors are first movers who have bought the Windows 7 operating system when it first came out. This could have been a purchase of a standalone version of the operating system, of a new computer that shipped with Windows 7 or an upgrade from an old copy of XP or Vista. The Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was released in February by Microsoft. Up until now there was only one option to get an integrated Windows 7 with SP1 installation if you owned a Windows 7 copy: Slipstreaming. Many users shy away from slipstreaming as it is perceived as technically complicated.

But it was the only option to avoid the following scenario: If you had to re-install Windows 7 you first needed to install the operating system, and then run a series of updates that included the service pack to bring the OS to the latest version. That may work on one computer system, but what if you need to re-install several computers on a network?

If you are not into slipstreaming you can now download the official Windows 7 with integrated SP1 from Microsoft’s distribution partner Digital River. Here are the downloads:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium x86 SP1 (bootable) [download]
  • Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 (bootable) [download]
  • Windows 7 Professional x86 SP1 (bootable) [download]
  • Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1 (bootable) [download]
  • Windows 7 Ultimate x86 SP1 (bootable) [download]
  • Windows 7 Ultimate X64 SP1 (bootable) [download]

The downloads are provided as ISO disc images which you need to burn to DVD first. If you are running Windows 7 you can right-click the ISO after download to do just that. You will need a blank DVD for that.

The downloads can also be handy for users who have not received physical discs of the operating system, for instance if they have bought a PC or notebook with a preinstalled version of Windows.

The operating system needs to be activated after a 30-day free trial period.

Have you updated the core Windows system browser to Internet Explorer 9 yet? Chance is that you noticed blurry fonts in the new version. This can be attributed to a change in font rendering in Internet Explorer 9. Internet Explorer 8 used whole-pixel positioned ClearType to render text by using the Windows Graphics Device Interface, whereas Internet Explorer 9 uses sub-pixel positioned ClearType to render text using DirectWrite.

This change caused the blurry font rendering on some Windows systems running Internet Explorer 9. We have seen several suggested fixes in the past, like installing a dll wrapper to change the font rendering.

Microsoft has now released an official update for computers running Internet Explorer 9 to improve the font rendering of several core system fonts. The fonts that received an update are Arial, Verdana and Tahoma in font sizes 8,9 and 10 points and regular styles.

The update is available for all operating systems that Internet Explorer 9 can be installed on. This includes the client operating systems Windows Vista and Windows 7, as well as the server operating systems Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2.

The updates are provided as downloads from Microsoft’s official support website. Here are the direct links to the download pages:

Please note that you need to pass a genuine verification check before the downloads become available on the support sites. A restart of the system is required before the update can be fully installed and applied to the system.

Windows users find further information about the “Text in some core fonts appears blurred in Internet Explorer 9 on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2″ update at Microsoft’s Support website.
