The Windows Registry can be called as the holder of all blueprints to any software programs, preference settings, hardware settings, OS configurations along with other things.
One of the most important and least understood program database on a Windows computer is the registry. It stores information about all programs, users, files, folders, passwords, and anything else on the computer on a cryptic and hard to read database. When you add a program to the computer, the registry is modified. When you delete a file or folder the registry is modified. It affects how the computer performs. And like any other database on the computer, it can be filled with old entries that no longer function, but manage to tie up the performance of the computer. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 users may experience problems with gadgets not displaying properly or working at all in the operating system. According to Microsoft gadgets may “appear as black squares, may appear to have vertical green lines down the center or may not appear at all and may have a blue exclamation marks next to it, or calendar gadget may displays without dates”.
The problem persists after trying to troubleshoot the issue with Windows System Restore, Turning UAC on or using scannow command to verify the integrity of all system files.
The cause of the issue has been identified as “incorrect settings in [the] Internet Security Zones”,
Microsoft has created a Fix It solution to resolve the issue so that gadgets display normally again on the desktop. Windows 7 users who experience the issue need to download the Fix It solution to their computer before they double-click the file. The interface language is English, but the fix itself works on all Windows 7 editions.
A manual fix has been posted as well. It involves editing the Windows Registry and is therefor only recommended for users with enough experience.
Click Start, and then type regedit in the Search box
Click regedit.exe under Programs
Browse to the following registry key and click on the “0” subkey
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0
In the right pane, right-click 1200, and then click Modify
In the Value data box, type either 1 or 0 to overwrite the existing value of 3. Then, click OK
Close the registry editor
Check to see that the issue is resolvedThe values 0, 1, and 3 are associated with the following behavior:
0 = Enabled, or the action is permitted
1 = Prompt
3 = Disabled, or the action is not permitted
