Yet again Microsoft is planning another big patch Tuesday for August. There is 13 security bulletins with patches for 22 potentially dangerous security vulnerabilities. Two of the thirteen bulletins are rated as “critical”. There is nine ranked as “important” and two as “moderate”.

Probably the biggest security vulnerability is with Internet Explorer. The “critical” update for IE fixes flaws which can lead to remote execution risks on all version of Internet Explorer, including IE 9. This months update patches will also fix holes in Windows 7 itself and Windows 2008. It patches up a potential, though difficult to exploit code execution risk. The update also covers security risks in Microsoft Office, .Net and Visual Studio.

Windows XP has been running strong for the last 10 years, but it finally looks like its age is beginning to show. Even though it is still the most used operating system on the planet today, it’s market share has finally dipped below the 50 percent last month according to the latest stats out courtesy of Net Applications.

It’s still incredible that Windows XP is still holding the number one spot worldwide, it’s survived the release of Windows Vista and now is still holding it’s own against Windows 7 for the time being. Windows 7 is still continuing to grow and holds just under 28 percent of the market at the moment. It overtook Windows Vista a long time ago which now has less than 10 percent of the market.

A couple of months ago some reports claimed that Windows 7 had overtaken Windows XP in the United States but Windows XP is still the reigning champion worldwide. However the rest of the world generally follows in the United States footprints so I’d expect Windows 7 to eventually overtake Windows XP, probably just before Windows 8 is released.

At the moment Microsoft and their Windows operating system controls around 87 percent of the overall OS market, that includes Apple’s Mac OS aswell as iOS and Android, Linux etc…

It’ll be interesting to see how long Windows XP will hold onto the top spot, it just refuses to die. Windows 7 has been on the market for about 22 months now and while it’s Microsoft’s fastest selling operating system it still has a long way to go before it claims the top spot for itself.

Anyone brave enough to place bets on when and if Windows 7 will overtake Windows XP?
