We are all well aware at how well Windows 7 is doing in terms of gaining market share. It’s long surpassed Windows Vista and is also well on the way to overtaking Windows XP. It already has in the US, and is not too far off in the rest of the world. However it’s anyone’s guess as to when Windows 7 will claim the number one spot.

Analyst firm Gartner Inc, is now sticking its neck out and claiming that by the end of 2011, Windows 7 will become the worlds leading operating system. It will be running on 94 percent of new PCs and on 42 percent of PCs around the world. They predict that the steady improvements in IT budgets throughout 2010 and 2011 are helping to accelerate the deployment of Windows 7 in enterprise markets, particularly in the US and Asia. By the end of 2011 they expect nearly 635 million new PCs worldwide will be shipped with Windows 7 running on them.

The statement Gartner released also said that the company predicts Apple’s Mac Os will be on 4.5 percent of new PCs this year. However it doesn’t expect Chrome OS, Android or Web OS to get any significant market share on PCs in the next few years. This is kind of obvious since those OS’s are more designed for smartphones and tablets.

Since 2008 Gartner say that Mac OS X has grown from 3.3 percent to 4 percent in 2010. By 2015 they predict 5.2 percent of new PCs will be running Mac OS X. The market share Mac holds varies greatly be region. In North America and Western Europe it is growing much faster.

Linux isn’t expected to gain any ground either, it’s still expected to be a niche for the next 5 years with its share below 2 percent. It’s just too expensive to port applications from Windows to Linux and the success it experienced on mini-netbooks was rather short lived.

It will be interesting to see just how accurate these predictions from Gartner are. Does anyone else agree with them? Will Windows 7 be king by the end of 2011?

If you’re planning to sell your business one day, you’ll have two potential kinds of acquirers: a financial buyer or a strategic buyer.

What is your current role in Microsoft? What kind of projects are you currently working on? In addition to providing support for Enterprise customers, I’ve have been focused on creating and providing training for our new hires and partners.

For most Windows Phone users this is not necessary, but for those in Australia or in the US on the At&t network, you may be interested in a new tool by one of the makers of ChevronWP7, Chris Walshie. Walshie explains that Microsoft created a “wrapper” over the entire update process making it easier to circumvent the carriers approval and push of the update. Chris notes on his Blog:

We really have to commend Microsoft here for being able to split up the OS updates into differential packs, which saves users downloading 200+ MB updates, unlike the IFruit updates.

In case you were wondering, the “IFruit” he’s referring to is pretty much any Apple product. It’s kind of odd that Microsoft created the updates this way. It’s almost as if they expected trouble with the carriers and made it this way on purpose to enable users to update their phone in a timely manner without officially supporting it. Who knows, right?

Step 5 Windows Phone Tool Gives the People Their NoDo Update

Unlike many other workarounds for unofficially updating to NoDo, this process seems straightforward and simple. You’ll need to download “ChevronWP7.Updater.exe” console app from his blog and follow the prompts through the update. There are more thorough instructions on his blog which you can find here, but keep in mind that you are using these tools at your own risk and no one is responsible for any damage that could potentially happen to your device but you. That being said, if you are brave and want NoDo desperately, head on over to Chris’ blog and give it a try.

Being an At&t Samsung Focus owner, I became impatient and used the ChevronWP7 tool he provides on his blog and was completely through the update process for both the pre-update and the NoDo update within minutes. It is simple to use and very few users are experiences issues, however, I would become familiar with the issues of some users in the comments section of his blog post before trying this workaround.

Internet Explorer was released to the public earlier on March 14th. Now Microsoft is making plans to download it to Windows users via the update system. Apparently with the 2.3 million downloads that occurred during the first 24 hours, Microsoft now want to be sure that users are aware and using their latest browser.

IE9 IE9 Roll Out in Late June

Other issues

Just exactly how will the rollout occur? Will is be staggered, say over several days? Will it be continent based, time Zone based? Those are some questions that may affect how successful the product roll out will be. Then too, there is the issue that IE9 32 bit is fast, but ie9 64 bit is not. So will the download include one or the other, and will users be able to select which one they want? And will it be considered a “critical” download or “important?” These questions still have to be addressed.

This is not new

Nonetheless, this type of move by Microsoft has occurred before.  Microsoft did the same with IE 8. But in that case, it involved Windows XP and Server 2003, and the update as marked as high-priority. Whereas, on Windows Vista and Server 2008 the roll out was designated as “Important.” Moreover, users were also prompted as to whether they wanted to be asked about installing IE 8 later, to install it immediately or to not install it at all. This kind of detail still has to be presented on the IE9 roll out. Microsoft also had a blocking tool. Where users could block the download and implementation of the browser. For example, IT managers may not want to implement the browser without further testing.

Browser Push

This browser push comes at a time when other browsers are also making headlines with their own downloads.  Firefox 4, for example, was downloaded 5.5 million times in its first 24 hours. And watch what will happen with Google, Opera, and Safari. Everyone wants to have the latest browsers available for the public.
