Yet again Microsoft is planning another big patch Tuesday for August. There is 13 security bulletins with patches for 22 potentially dangerous security vulnerabilities. Two of the thirteen bulletins are rated as “critical”. There is nine ranked as “important” and two as “moderate”.

Probably the biggest security vulnerability is with Internet Explorer. The “critical” update for IE fixes flaws which can lead to remote execution risks on all version of Internet Explorer, including IE 9. This months update patches will also fix holes in Windows 7 itself and Windows 2008. It patches up a potential, though difficult to exploit code execution risk. The update also covers security risks in Microsoft Office, .Net and Visual Studio.

Windows XP has been running strong for the last 10 years, but it finally looks like its age is beginning to show. Even though it is still the most used operating system on the planet today, it’s market share has finally dipped below the 50 percent last month according to the latest stats out courtesy of Net Applications.

It’s still incredible that Windows XP is still holding the number one spot worldwide, it’s survived the release of Windows Vista and now is still holding it’s own against Windows 7 for the time being. Windows 7 is still continuing to grow and holds just under 28 percent of the market at the moment. It overtook Windows Vista a long time ago which now has less than 10 percent of the market.

A couple of months ago some reports claimed that Windows 7 had overtaken Windows XP in the United States but Windows XP is still the reigning champion worldwide. However the rest of the world generally follows in the United States footprints so I’d expect Windows 7 to eventually overtake Windows XP, probably just before Windows 8 is released.

At the moment Microsoft and their Windows operating system controls around 87 percent of the overall OS market, that includes Apple’s Mac OS aswell as iOS and Android, Linux etc…

It’ll be interesting to see how long Windows XP will hold onto the top spot, it just refuses to die. Windows 7 has been on the market for about 22 months now and while it’s Microsoft’s fastest selling operating system it still has a long way to go before it claims the top spot for itself.

Anyone brave enough to place bets on when and if Windows 7 will overtake Windows XP?

Windows 7 improved the out of the box media codec situation over Windows Vista, but things aren’t quite perfect with average support for MKV files and no Blu-ray support.  To get the perfect Windows 7 Media Center codec support required a bit of fiddling and crossing fingers, particularly when it came to supporting MKV files.

Although codec packs like Shark007 improve W7MC MKV support, they still leave a bit of a blackhole when it comes to providing an easy way to change language or subtitle streams when playing MKV file, relying on buggy 3rd party addons like the Media Control plugin which works sporadically.  Skipping and fast-forwarding MKV files within W7MC is also difficult using these apps – fast-forwarding and rewinding doesn’t work, and skip forward or backwards too quickly and W7MC will crash.

Last week W7MC Arcsoft upgraded their TotalMedia Theatre 5 suite with the 5.0.1.133 patch which improved its MKV capabilities to include support for multiple audio tracks, and support for standard and VobSub subtitles in MKV.  This is brilliant news as finally there’s a way to easily play MKV files in W7MC, that also passes the WAF test.

Now, unfortunately TMT5 is quite pricey at $99.99 but it is the best media player and in tandem with My Movies 4, it will provide the ultimate W7MC experience without having to spend hours if not weeks configuring codecs:

  • Play any media file smoothly
  • Full HD and 3D support – including full MKV support
  • Play blu-ray discs (and with My Movies play blu-ray rips on hard drives)
  • Play any 2D Video or Photo in 3D
  • Upscale SD content with SimHD
There is a free trial if you want to try TMT5 out before making the plunge.

Microsoft and the Sports Newscasting network, ESPN, will be working together to update Xbox LIVE to provide a new format for viewing sporting events. This August 25, the two companies will be providing a new sports-user interface such that it will be possible to view two sporting events at once, plus there will be other features that will make viewing different and enjoyable.

Features of the new update:

  • My Sports. If you have a special or favorite sport or team, you can designate them as “My Sports.” In this way you can go to the channel bypassing any tabs or links to get there.
  • Mini Guide. If you would like to get an update and preview of the content of a game or event, go to the bottom right side of the screen to access it.
  • Split Screen. You can watch two sporting events at the same time with Split Screen.
  • Voice Control with Kinect. Can’t find your remote, and now you’ve lost access to your screen? You can fix that with your voice activation and control of the Kinect.
  • Scoreboard. For college football you can jump and get a score at any time.
  • Reminders. With so many game features to keep track of you can get a reminder by tagging games to set a reminder, such as when half-time is about to start or end.
  • Live alerts. You can receive constant updates about score changes, even when you are not keeping track of the scoreboard.
  • ESPN BottomLine. You can keep up to date on breaking news and score updates from different sports regardless of their location.

Sports enthusiasts should be happy with the new features because they will be able to keep track of their games and events…almost like being there and more because they will be able to see multiple events at the same time.
