Is there true value to Microsoft Certifications vs. College Degree when pursuing an IT career?

If employers are faced with the option of looking for a degree or Microsoft Certifications, which turns out to be the most valuable? Do they say “nice certifications” or “it would be better if you had a Bachelor’s Degree”. Can it truly increase your income that dramatically?

What is the going rate for such classes and what is too much to pay?

  1. Nope, sorry. They add value to a degree and I know some companies that have their employees get certified. It is far better to get a bachelors degree.

All I know on the matter is to steer clear from those private expensive schools and instead opt for the community college or state uni. Please also steer clear from those online, for profit schools such as university of phoenix, strayer, devry, ITT tech as they are merely out to ‘make a profit’. Former students of u of phoenix created: http://www.uopsucks.com

US colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ I would definately go for the college degree (‘college degree’ usually refers to a 4 year degree, just fyi :) over ‘just’ a certificate.

For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search ‘computer software engineer’, ‘computer programmer’ or such.

For jobs requiring a bahcelors, it wouldn’t do squat if you didn’t have a bachelors to begin with. MCSE has lost nearly all of its luster of the years as it’s been known to be a joke certification where just paying the money and finding the cheat sheets on the internet would get you to pass. While you could get away with MCSE alone on your resume ten years ago, you would instead be laughed at today.
