All my previous experience was with the "Premier" version. The only reason I bought this version this year is that for some reason, they moved the Schedule C functionality from Premier to the Home and Business version, and thereby increased the price by about $20 for the same thing. That is the only reason I downgraded the product: I feel that they are gouging small business customers with this change, and I think they should correct it by putting this functionality back at the Premier price level. <br/><br/>As for the use of the program, I just downloaded and installed it. Installation was flawless. In a quick overview of the program, it seems to be stable so far, unlike the reviews for the CD version of the same software. I like the new format for "Explore on My Own" to take you out of the guided process and allow easier handling of specific tax topics: Turbotax has always had a similar function -- I just like this view of it better than before. The importing of my previous tax year info and personal info was easier and more seamless than in prior versions. <br/><br/>Another reason I came back to Intuit this year was that even though they occasionally have bugs with their products, they stand behind them with excellent tech support. Good software; overpriced just to get Schedule C, January 1, 2010

This review is from: TurboTax Home & Business Federal + State + Federal efile 2009 (CD-ROM)

I have used previous versions for about the last 10 years. All my previous experience was with the “Premier” version.

As for the use of the program, I just downloaded and installed it. Installation was flawless. I like the new format for “Explore on My Own” to take you out of the guided process and allow easier handling of specific tax topics: Turbotax has always had a similar function — I just like this view of it better than before. Another reason I came back to Intuit this year was that even though they occasionally have bugs with their products, they stand behind them with excellent tech support. My recent experience with conflicts between Quickbooks and Microsoft Vista and 7 operating systems resulted in numerous hours on the phone with their tech support — they were both persistent and generous with tech support time until they found a work-around to the incompatibilities. Knowing that they take this approach was a huge factor in having the confidence to proceed with their TurboTax product again this year.

Despite the initial negative reviews talking about TurboTax's bugginess, I needed to purchase the product today (12/31) so that I could take the expense deduction on my 2009 tax return. I've followed the prices for a while and seen them decline. The $73.62 price that I paid to download probably won't be the lowest, but if last year's price history chart is any indication, the price will bottom somewhere around $65 in mid-January before jumping back up into the mid $90's around February 1st when everyone gets their W-2 forms and are ready to actually do their taxes. <br/><br/>The download from Amazon was fast and flawless, and I do mean fast. I have Comcast internet and all 85 MB was downloaded to my computer in slightly less than a minute. I know that the Amazon website says 105 MB, but the Amazon downloader only stated 85 MB. <br/><br/>Installation also occured flawlessly on my computer running XP. Upon executing, the software downloaded the latest updates from Intuit flawlessly. Once the program was up and running, I imported 2008's return, added my password, and saved. I won't do anything else until I receive my W-2's in late January. By then I expect Intuit to probably have another update to improve/fix anything else. <br/><br/>I've been using TurboTax for my Home & Business since 2004 and have never been dissapointed with the software. The only thing that I was dissapointed with was the price that I was charged as a returning Intuit TurboTax customer. I believe that Intuit charges about $106 including shipping. Needless to say, I'm quite happy paying $73 and getting the same software. <div style="padding-top: 10px; clear: both; width: 100%;"> <div style="float:left; padding-right:15px; border-right:1px solid #CCCCCC"><div style="padding-bottom:5px;"><b class="tiny" style="color:#666666;white-space:nowrap;">Help other customers find the most helpful reviews</b> </div><div style="width:300px;"> <a name="RG7DV6VBSE49I.2115.Helpful.Reviews" style="font-size:1px;"> </a><span><span class="votingPrompt">Was this review helpful to you? </span><a rel="nofollow" class="votingButtonReviews" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/voting/cast/Reviews/2115/RG7DV6VBSE49I/Helpful/1?ie=UTF8&token=5EEBBF43534B3EDFD5D807DCF99B500B465683F8&target=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hbWF6b24uY29tL3Byb2R1Y3QtcmV2aWV3cy9CMDAyUlM4RjhXP19lbmNvZGluZz1VVEY4JnN1bW1hcnk9MCZhbGlua0NvZGU9eG0yJnRhZz1zY29yZWJvYXJkMDctMjAmdj0yJmxpbmtDb2RlPXhtMiZhc2luPUIwMDJSUzhGOFcmdHJ1bmNhdGU9NTAwMCZha2lkPUFLSUFKTFlWNUZBSERYNkNWQTdBJnNpZz04dkRoaHJVaFklMkJOV29jeGVpY2laTUNIViUyQmNpaEpiUUVidGsyY0ZmdWhrYyUzRCZleHA9MjAxMS0wOC0wOFQyMyUzQTUzJTNBMTFaJmF0YWc9c2NvcmVib2FyZDA3LTIw&voteAnchorName=RG7DV6VBSE49I.2115.Helpful.Reviews&voteSessionID=000-0000000-0000000"><img src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/communities/reviews/btn-yes-sec-md._V192249951_.gif" width="35" alt="Yes" style="vertical-align:middle;" height="18" border="0"/></a> <a rel="nofollow" class="votingButtonReviews" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/voting/cast/Reviews/2115/RG7DV6VBSE49I/Helpful/-1?ie=UTF8&token=2310A65C8C7B8B818725C4DE5CEB262F3655CB42&target=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hbWF6b24uY29tL3Byb2R1Y3QtcmV2aWV3cy9CMDAyUlM4RjhXP19lbmNvZGluZz1VVEY4JnN1bW1hcnk9MCZhbGlua0NvZGU9eG0yJnRhZz1zY29yZWJvYXJkMDctMjAmdj0yJmxpbmtDb2RlPXhtMiZhc2luPUIwMDJSUzhGOFcmdHJ1bmNhdGU9NTAwMCZha2lkPUFLSUFKTFlWNUZBSERYNkNWQTdBJnNpZz04dkRoaHJVaFklMkJOV29jeGVpY2laTUNIViUyQmNpaEpiUUVidGsyY0ZmdWhrYyUzRCZleHA9MjAxMS0wOC0wOFQyMyUzQTUzJTNBMTFaJmF0YWc9c2NvcmVib2FyZDA3LTIw&voteAnchorName=RG7DV6VBSE49I.2115.Helpful.Reviews&voteSessionID=000-0000000-0000000"><img src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/communities/reviews/btn-no-sec-md._V192249949_.gif" width="35" alt="No" style="vertical-align:middle;" height="18" border="0"/></a> <span class="votingMessage"/></span> </div></div><div style="float:left;"><div style="padding-left:15px;"><div style="white-space:nowrap;"><span class="tiny"> <a name="RG7DV6VBSE49I.2115.Inappropriate.Reviews" style="font-size:1px;"> </a><span class="reportingButton"><nobr><a rel="nofollow" class="reportingButton" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/voting/cast/Reviews/2115/RG7DV6VBSE49I/Inappropriate/1?ie=UTF8&token=1632014CA29E52B9C44C43E873C8D30A1EFAA374&target=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hbWF6b24uY29tL3Byb2R1Y3QtcmV2aWV3cy9CMDAyUlM4RjhXP19lbmNvZGluZz1VVEY4JnN1bW1hcnk9MCZhbGlua0NvZGU9eG0yJnRhZz1zY29yZWJvYXJkMDctMjAmdj0yJmxpbmtDb2RlPXhtMiZhc2luPUIwMDJSUzhGOFcmdHJ1bmNhdGU9NTAwMCZha2lkPUFLSUFKTFlWNUZBSERYNkNWQTdBJnNpZz04dkRoaHJVaFklMkJOV29jeGVpY2laTUNIViUyQmNpaEpiUUVidGsyY0ZmdWhrYyUzRCZleHA9MjAxMS0wOC0wOFQyMyUzQTUzJTNBMTFaJmF0YWc9c2NvcmVib2FyZDA3LTIw&voteAnchorName=RG7DV6VBSE49I.2115.Inappropriate.Reviews&voteSessionID=000-0000000-0000000"></a></nobr></span> </span> <span style="color:#CCCCCC;">|</span> <span class="tiny"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/review/RG7DV6VBSE49I" target="_top"></a></span></div><div style="white-space:nowrap;padding-left:-5px;padding-top:5px;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/review/RG7DV6VBSE49I" target="_top"><img src="http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/x-locale/communities/discussion_boards/comment-sm._V192250344_.gif" width="16" alt="Comment" hspace="3" align="absmiddle" height="16" border="0"/></a> <a href="http://www.amazon.com/review/RG7DV6VBSE49I" target="_top">Comments (5)</a></div></div></div><div style="clear:both;"/> </div> <br/></div>

Download from Amazon – - – the TurboTax bugs are Gone, December 31, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I just downloaded TurboTax Home & Business (for tax year 2009) from Amazon. Despite the initial negative reviews talking about TurboTax’s bugginess, I needed to purchase the product today (12/31) so that I could take the expense deduction on my 2009 tax return. I’ve followed the prices for a while and seen them decline. The $73.62 price that I paid to download probably won’t be the lowest, but if last year’s price history chart is any indication, the price will bottom somewhere around $65 in mid-January before jumping back up into the mid $90′s around February 1st when everyone gets their W-2 forms and are ready to actually do their taxes.

The download from Amazon was fast and flawless, and I do mean fast. I have Comcast internet and all 85 MB was downloaded to my computer in slightly less than a minute. I know that the Amazon website says 105 MB, but the Amazon downloader only stated 85 MB.

Installation also occured flawlessly on my computer running XP. Upon executing, the software downloaded the latest updates from Intuit flawlessly. Once the program was up and running, I imported 2008′s return, added my password, and saved. I won’t do anything else until I receive my W-2′s in late January. By then I expect Intuit to probably have another update to improve/fix anything else.

I’ve been using TurboTax for my Home & Business since 2004 and have never been dissapointed with the software. The only thing that I was dissapointed with was the price that I was charged as a returning Intuit TurboTax customer. I believe that Intuit charges about $106 including shipping. Needless to say, I’m quite happy paying $73 and getting the same software.

The package says one free state download. True, you can download one state of your choice. However, you only get to prepare one state only. All additional state preparations are at $39 via download of even the same state. Thus for example, you have two family members living in California. The first person downloads the free California state download. If the second family member, who also needs to file the California state return, the second family member needs to pay $39 to turbotax via the software, to prepare the second state return, again, even if it is the same state. Contacted turbotax and it took several tries until they stated that this is the case. The first few times they would not confirm it but rather dodge the question and give an ambiguous answer, not admitting to the change. <br/><br/><br/>1/16/10 update: after installing an online software update yesterday, it seems that turbotax has now changed their policy/software back to the way it was in previous years (probably due to the numerous complaints that they have received). Now, as with last year's edition, you can do more than one state preparation for the same state, for the one free state that you have download. I have now given it 4 stars instead of the previous 1 star, with 4 stars becuase turbotax, as stated above, tried to previously limit the one free download to also mean one state prep (which is not the case now). Other than the previous frustration regarding the state download problem, turbotax has always given me great results. Great advice/info when you tag the help function. The help function will guide you for whatever is currently on the screen, thus you do not have to hunt for the information. <br/><br/><br/>2/17/10 update <br/>I have still been hearing that some people cannot do more than one state prep for the free included one state download. I have downgraded the star ratings from a 4 previously to a 2 now because the state download/prep problem still exists for some people. If the problem is fixed, I will upgrade the star rating then. <br/><br/>Don't know if it is real but "Bob Meighan, VP of turbotax" wrote to one of my comments on the deluxe version stating that: <br/><br/>**************************** <br/>Bob Meighan says: <br/>Anthony... TurboTax does not charge extra for preparing multiple state returns for the same state. There was no change in our pricing policy this year. One state dowload/one state prep problem seems to be fixed!, January 13, 2010
By
This review is from: TurboTax Home & Business Federal + State + Federal efile 2009 (CD-ROM)

I have always used turbotax but this year but they changed their pricing.

1/16/10 update: after installing an online software update yesterday, it seems that turbotax has now changed their policy/software back to the way it was in previous years (probably due to the numerous complaints that they have received). Now, as with last year’s edition, you can do more than one state preparation for the same state, for the one free state that you have download.

2/17/10 update
I have still been hearing that some people cannot do more than one state prep for the free included one state download. I have downgraded the star ratings from a 4 previously to a 2 now because the state download/prep problem still exists for some people. If the problem is fixed, I will upgrade the star rating then.

Don’t know if it is real but “Bob Meighan, VP of turbotax” wrote to one of my comments on the deluxe version stating that:

****************************
Bob Meighan says:
Anthony… TurboTax does not charge extra for preparing multiple state returns for the same state. There was no change in our pricing policy this year. I believe if you received a different story from one of our agents, I suspect it was because they probably thought you were referring to TurboTax Online, where you are charged for each return.

Bob Meighan
VP, TurboTax
****************************

Again I don’t know if Bob is for real. If so, I would kindly ask Bob if he could change the turbotax website to state officially, for once and for all, that a buyer of the desktop version shall have unlimited state preps for the same free included state download.

I have also heard from another buyer that turbotax said this was due to a software flaw and should be fixed by Feb 25. We shall see. In the meantime, even though I can do multiple returns on the same state, many others cannot, thus buyer beware.

2/28/10 update:

I have received a comment stating that now it is possible to prepare more than one same state return from the free one included state download. Please let us know if it IS or IS NOT working for you.

Much improved over Office 2008, October 28, 2010
By
Daniel Peterson (Kirkland, WA) –
(REAL NAME)

This review is from: Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Business 2011 – 1 Pack (DVD-ROM)

In general, I think Office 2011 is a good upgrade to 2008. A lot of the deficiences in Office 2008 have been addressed, and the application is a bit more “mac like”.

PROS:

Probably the biggest change people will see out of the gate are interface changes. I think the move to a more “ribbon like” interface was a good one, that helps keep everything you want together (especially on multiple monitors), but the formatting toolbars are still around if you want to back to those.

Help is now Apple help based, all versions support Automator actions, apps are much more friendly to spaces, spotlight and time machine, VBA is back, etc.

Outlook is a great addition if you’re connecting your Mac to an Exchange server at work, and is actually pretty decent on it’s own. I think I may actually prefer it to Mail.app, but we’ll see how my thoughts are over a longer time scale.

CONS:

Office 2011 is now intel only, but considering the fact that Apple has also started dropping PowerPC support, I don’t think that’s a huge deal.

Licensing has changed for the business version, whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends on your situation. Office 2008 let you install a copy on a desktop and a portable computer. Office 2011 now comes in a “1 license” and “2 license” version. If you don’t have 2 computers, this might be a positive thing for you, but if you’ve got a desktop and a laptop, you’re probably not too happy about it.

Office 2011 also does require activation, although that’s quick and painless. I’m sure some people won’t like it though.

Finally, I can strongly recommend upgrading to Office 2011. I would wager that this will be the major version for the next five to six years, in the same way that 2004 has been widely adopted and stable for the last six years. <br/><br/>I should state at the outset that I am primarily a user of Word for the production of long, annotated documents. I also use Excel and Powerpoint, but would not consider myself a power-user of these applications. I have been using Microsoft Word since 1986. This review is mainly for people who have been Word/Office users and are wondering whether to upgrade. <br/><br/>All three versions of the Office for Mac 2011 suite contain Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The Home & Student version does not contain Outlook; the Home & Business and Academic versions DO contain Outlook. Outlook replaces Entourage. Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

When I reviewed the prior version of Office, I recommended that users stick with Office 2004. Finally, I can strongly recommend upgrading to Office 2011. I would wager that this will be the major version for the next five to six years, in the same way that 2004 has been widely adopted and stable for the last six years.

I should state at the outset that I am primarily a user of Word for the production of long, annotated documents. I also use Excel and Powerpoint, but would not consider myself a power-user of these applications. I have been using Microsoft Word since 1986. This review is mainly for people who have been Word/Office users and are wondering whether to upgrade.

All three versions of the Office for Mac 2011 suite contain Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The Home & Student version does not contain Outlook; the Home & Business and Academic versions DO contain Outlook. Outlook replaces Entourage. If you do intend to use Outlook, keep in mind that this version only syncs with Exchange Server 2007 or newer (check with your I.T. people to see if you are okay). Furthermore, Outlook is not merely a renaming of Entourage; some functions change and/or disappear. You can do a custom install of Office 2011 and keep Entourage if you wish.

As of late 2010, many of the negative comments about this version revolve around Outlook (missing features, syncing, import problems). If you are a power Outlook user, I would take this as a big warning flag and a potential reason to wait for the next update from Microsoft.

[Update 4/11: Microsoft released the first service pack for this suite in April of 2011. The update fixes a number of problems/shortcomings across the suite, including some that led to highly critical remarks about Outlook. For a list of changes, do a search for Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2525412.]

[Update 7/11: Office 2004 for Mac does NOT work under the recently released OS X Lion. This is a good opportunity to upgrade to Office 2011. Microsoft's Mac group has indicated, however, that it will be some months before this latest version exploits Lion's new features (e.g. autosave). I am finding no compatibility issues, however, between Lion and Office 2011.]

My snapshot of Microsoft’s latest release:

Pros:
-Office 2011 is faster. It loads faster. It closes out faster. There seem to be very few delays in moving through very long documents. There is no sluggishness on my computer (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac with 2 GB of memory).
-The interface is improved from earlier versions. While I have qualms about it, I think it is the best one that Microsoft has offered for Office. After using the suite for the last 9 months, I have come to appreciate the context sensative ribbon. I find that I am spending less time digging for obscure commands.
-VBA support is back (critically important for many people; if you don’t know what it is, you probably don’t need it).
-Side-by-side arrangement of multiple documents. This sounds minor, but if you compose using multiple document windows, this will have you rejoicing. Why it has been so difficult to implement is a mystery (you could do it in earlier versions by tweaking Word or by sizing the windows manually). Now you can do it quickly from the “Window” menu. Thank you. Thank you. A million thank yous.
-Better ability to browse and import media from elsewhere on your Mac.
-I am intrigued by the new notebook view; it allows for scribbles and audio inputs.
-There is a new full screen mode which helps me focus on the document; I really like this feature but other people will find it hokey.
-Built-in support for collaborative document creation/editing and cloud computing.

Cons:
-The interface may be improved from earlier versions, but the intent was clearly to make it more like the Windows version of Office rather than exploit OS X. I think the Mac group at Microsoft is between a rock and a hard place on this one: they can choose to make Office more consistent across platforms (think about the demands placed on corporate I.T. departments that support PCs and Macs), or they can create something more unique and native to the Mac (i.e., fully optimized for the Mac). I would prefer the latter, but the former wins. Office for the Mac is handcuffed to Windows.
-I find the interface easier to use than old versions, but I still find myself fighting with it at times (e.g. the Excel sort button toggles between A to Z and Z to A each time you press it… why?).
-For power Excel users, this version does not yet have an Analysis Tool Pack.
-I would have liked to see a bit more discipline in how options are presented. To give an example, when choosing how to look at a particular Word document there are no less than four different places where one can specify some aspect of the page…
