WPCentral broke the exciting news today that internet sharing/tethering is not only coming in Windows Phone but is actually baked in to the impending Mango update. Since the details are still sketchy, I started digging around to find out how this feature works.

Following the breadcrumb trails of a tip from Aleksandr “@Arktronic”, I came across some localization files which gives some clues about how the tethering functionality can be enabled.

The two strings that caught my eye, “To enable tethering on this device dial {0}” and “To enable tethering on this device, go to {0}”, would suggest tethering will not be enabled by default. Instead, users will have to call their operator or visit their operator’s website to have the feature enabled (provisioned) remotely.

The localization files also reveal users will be able to choose between no encryption (Open) and WPA2 encryption for hotspot security and the number of guests allowed is also customizable, presumably by the carrier.

With registry editing access locked down in Mango, manually overriding this functionality may prove difficult but I’m sure top minds are at it already. As someone who has used the same feature on Android many times over, this couldn’t come soon enough.

When we talk about enterprise computing, and enterprise identity, we usually talk in terms of large-scale system architectures.

Using the Cleaner tool

As mentioned in previous articles, CCleaner is a free application from Piriform. In this article I’ll show you one of its major features, a useful cleaning application called Cleaner that you can use to rid your computer of redundant space wasting files.

When you open CCleaner, it defaults to its first feature, Cleaner. Its purpose is to locate unused and unwanted files on your computer within Windows and Applications directories.

In the Cleaner window there are two tabs, Windows and Applications. To switch from one to the other, press the appropriate tab.

When you look at either the Windows or Applications window you will see a list of folders.  Some boxes are checked while others not. Cleaner automatically checks the checked folders searching for files that it considers redundant.

You can decide where you want Cleaner to search. Just uncheck any ticked box if you do not want that folder checked.

Note: You must uncheck folders you do not want checked before pressing the Analyze button.

Once you click the Analyze button, Cleaner begins analysing the files in the checked folders. It does Windows and Applications at the same time. When it finishes it displays a list of files to be removed.

The next step is to press the Run Cleaner button. Before Cleaner removes the unwanted files, it displays a cautionary dialog box asking you to confirm your wish to proceed.

Clicking the Ok button gives Cleaner the go-ahead. Should you have a change of heart press the Cancel button.

The final screen shows a list of removed files from both locations – Windows and Applications.

Cleaner is a simple to use and a quick way to rid your computer of space wasting useless files.

Just as Bill Gates did with Microsoft in January 2000, although under different circumstances, Apple CEO does today August 24, 2011. In a letter to to the board of directors and the Apple community, Apple head Steve Jobs relinquished his title of chief executive officer and will take a position as chairman of the board and Apple employee. The writing has, unfortunately, been on the wall for some time.

Steve Jobs has taken two leaves of absence since a cancer scare in 2004 and has looked awfully bad in recent appearances for the tech company, however, any exact reasons for leaving are to remain a secret other than a mention that he is no longer able to perform his duties as CEO. Here is the open letter:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Although I may have never seen eye to eye with how Mr. Jobs handles customers and his business, one thing is sure: Apple would not be where they are today
without Steve’s reemergence as head of Apple back in 1997. I’d not like to sound morbid as Job’s is certainly still alive and plans seem to be to continue to work closely with Apple, I would be amiss to neglect mentioning the impact he’s had on both Apple’s products and competitor’s products as well.

Perhaps no single company has been more important to its industry than has Apple for the last few years, so it is a shame to see Jobs feel it necessary to step down as head of Apple, but he leaves the reigns to capable hands in former COO and now officially CEO Tim Cook. We wish Steve Jobs the best of luck with his health and hope to see him handling his chairman duties via a Windows 8 PC very soon.

Third in a series. As a long-time programmer, I was still using Windows 95 when I finally purchased my mainstay computer that came with Windows XP.
